*World Hepatitis Day*
World Hepatitis Day (WHD) takes places every year on 28 July bringing the world together under a single theme to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to influence real change. In 2021 the theme is *‘Hepatitis Can’t Wait’.*

On World Hepatitis Day,  we call on people from across the world to take action and raise awareness of hepatitis because Hepatitis Can’t Wait.

World Hepatitis Day, aims to raise global awareness of hepatitis — a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E and encourage prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Hepatitis affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, causing acute and chronic disease and killing close to 1.34 million people every year. Hepatitis causes liver diseases and can also kill a person. In some countries hepatitis B is commonest cause of cirrhosis and may also cause liver cancer(HCC)

Hepatitis groups, patients and advocates worldwide take part in events on 28 July. Notably in 2012, a Guinness World Record was created when 12,588 people from 20 countries did the Three Wise Monkeys actions on World Hepatitis Day to signify the willful ignorance of the disease.

The inaugural International Hepatitis C Awareness day, coordinated by various European and Middle Eastern Patient Groups and Baby Muriel, took place on October 1, 2004. However, many patient groups continued to mark 'hepatitis day' on disparate dates. For this reason in 2008, the World Hepatitis Alliance in collaboration with patient groups declared May 19 the first global World Hepatitis Day.

Following the adoption of a resolution during the 63rd World Health Assembly in May 2010, World Hepatitis Day was given global endorsement as the primary focus for national and international awareness-raising efforts and the date was changed to July 28 (in honour of Nobel Laureate Baruch Samuel Blumberg, discoverer of the hepatitis B virus, who celebrates his birthday on that date). The resolution resolves that "28 July shall be designated as World Hepatitis Day in order to provide an opportunity for education and greater understanding of viral hepatitis as a global public health problem, and to stimulate the strengthening of preventive and control measures of this disease in Member States."

World Hepatitis Day is now recognised in over 100 countries each year through events such as free screenings, poster campaigns, demonstrations, concerts, talk shows, flash mobs and vaccination drives, amongst many others. Each year a report is published by the WHO and the World Hepatitis Alliance detailing all the events across the world.

The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), established in 1950, is a global organization concerned with irrigation and drainage.

In 1946, the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) (a non-official national organization comprising heads of the irrigation services in all the States of India and entrusted with the tasks of encouraging and coordinating research relating to, and developments, in irrigation techniques) requested the Government of India to invite the Governments of other countries to cooperate with them in the setting up of a non-governmental international organization for the development of the science and technique of irrigation.

The response to the invitation from Government of India was encouraging and the International Commission on Irrigation and Canals was set up with support from 11 countries as Founder Members (Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Serbia (former Yugoslavia), Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand and Turkey) and its Secretariat (Central Office) located in New Delhi, India, at a meeting held at Simla (India) on 24 June 1950 when a provisional constitution was adopted. The Constitution was finalized at the First International Executive Council meeting of the Commission, held in Delhi (India) in January, 1951 and the name of the Commission changed to International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage.  The Commission at its 8th meeting held in April 1957 widened the scope of the Commission by including in its function the subject of flood control and river training.
