Born on this day, 23rd July, Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, known popularly as Chandrashekhar Azad (23 July 1906 — 27 February 1931), was a great Patriot, matyr, and  revolutionary who reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) after the death of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other prominent party leaders, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri and Ashfaqulla Khan. On 27th February 1931,he was betrayed and surrounded by police at Alfred Park, Allahabad. After a long shootout, holding true to his pledge to always remain Azad (Free) and never be captured alive, he shot himself with his last bullet. This park has been renamed after him. A special Cover has also been issued on 23/07/2016 at Allahabad.
Born on 23rd July, Haile Selassie I ( born Tafari Makonnen; 23 July 1892 – 27 August 1975) was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. Prior to his coronation, he had been the Regent Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia from 1916. He is a defining figure in modern Ethiopian history. He was a member of the Solomonic dynasty who traced his lineage to Emperor Menelik I, the son of King Solomon and Makeda the Queen of Sheba.

On 23rd July 1970, Qaboos bin Said al Said becomes Sultan of Oman, after overthrowing his father, Said bin Taimur,( Said bin Taimur - 13 August 1910 – 19 October 1972;  - was the 13th Sultan of Muscat and Oman from 10 February 1932 until he was deposed on 23 July 1970 by his son Qaboos bin Said) . The new, ruler initiating massive reforms, modernization programs and put an end to a decade   long civil war.
On 23rd July 1962, Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He and Babe Ruth are perhaps the only US sportsmen to have at least 3 different  US stamps issued in  their honour.

A commemorative postage stamp Issued on (23/July/1956) The Birth Centenary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (23/July/1856 - 01/August/1920) an Indian Marathi nationalist and freedom fighter "The father of the unrest part of Lal Bal Pal triumvirate : Tilak was the first leader of the Indian independence movement.The British colonial authorities called him The father of the Indian unrest.He was also conferred with the title of Lokmanya which means 'accepted by the people ( as their Leader) Mahatma Gandhi called him The Maker of Modern India.Tilak was one of the first and strongest advocetes of Swaraj and a strong radical in Indian consciousness.He is known for quote in Marathi : Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it , He formed a close alliance with many Indian National Congress leaders including Bipin Chandra pal , Lala Lajpat Rai , Aurobindo Ghose , V.O.Chidambaram Pillai .

Mahatma Gandhi visited the Delhi station on November 12 1947 and addressed the refugees who had  temporarily settled at Kurukshetra after partition of the subcontinent.
