SR Ranganathan was born in 1892 in Vedantapuram village next to Sirkazhi in Naga District, Tamil Nadu. Ranganathan worked as a Lecturer in Maths at the Universities of Mangalore, Coimbatore and Chennai.
In 1924 he was appointed Librarian of the University of Chennai. He went to London and learned the theory of classifying texts. On his return to the country he began to reorganize the university library; Founded the Chennai Literary Society.
He started the School of Library Science and served as its director for 15 years. Has authored over 60 books and written over 2000 articles in many languages.
He was one of the individuals who joined the task of improving the literary system at the Banaras Hindu University and classified the one lakh books he had written as an individual.
He learned the 'Library Science' charter course and taught it himself. Appointed President of the Indian Literary Association. Founded the Documentation Record Research Center and the Statistical Institute of India. He has won various awards including 'Padmasree'.
Last 1972 Sept. At 27, in his 80s, he died of natural causes.
